Southend-on-Sea and District Philatelic Society was born on Saturday, September 30th. 1916, following an advertisement, placed in the Southend and Westcliff Graphic, by W.H.J. Wixley. Twelve people attended the first meeting at Boots' Cafe, Southend Broadway, with written support from ten others.
More than ninety years later, after relatively few changes in meeting venue, the Society continues to provide a focus for all levels of stamp collecting, for all age groups. It provides talks on all branches of philately and affords opportunities for member participation. An active stamp-packet circuit operates, offering members the chance to purchase stamps of their particular collecting interests, at prices from pence to pounds.
